Script Breakdown

Here's the script breakdown. From this I can start thinking about how I go about planning each day of shooting.

Rough Storyboard

Here's the rough storyboard. I've been through it with my D.P and he's added a little to it. From this I'll draw up a shotlist and then from that my D.P will make his own fully comprehensive storyboard so that he and the camera department can set up shots completely independently leaving me more time to work with the actors. I've deliberately not storyboarded the first two scenes. This is because in my mind it looks and feels different to the rest of the film (it is the only indoor one). If I were to storyboard it now then it might not sit well with the overall style of the film so I would like to shoot the other scenes first and then storyboard the first scene. Seing as the first scene is quite short and will be shot last I have more than enough time to think about the shots.

Props

My Art Director Steve has made me a mood board with the various props that are required. Overall I like what he's got planned, we're on the same wavelength, especially with his great idea of having one of Keith's shopping bags be one of those checkered heavy duty plastic bags.

Drafts 3 and 4

Here are the third and fourth drafts. The fourth has only a few slight changes to the third. However there have been some major changes between the second and third. Basically I've had to make the thing a hell of a lot shorter so that this film will be the appropriate film festival length. This has resulted in a whole scene being turned into a montage sequence and the scenes before the credits being halved.

To help me cut things down I broke down each scene into it's key events.

And here are the drafts. You'll need a dropbox account to view the link.

Location Scouting 3

Here's another option for the main street scenes. It's also another option for the charity shop scene, I'm referring to St Vincent's charity shop in the photo by the post office.

Location Scouting 2

Here's the house that I plan on using for the indoor scenes. Although the indoor scenes are in two separate settings - another character's kitchen and another character's sitting room - we can shoot two separate exteriors to show the change in location and then just move from the sitting room to the kitchen.

The Look

Looks wise the film, Anuvahood is just what I'm aiming at. Despite the fact that it's absolutely awful it's the kind of overall thing I'm aiming for: a light, quick comic book style film that's (obviously) shot on little budget but still looks stylish. However bad the script may be, the colour grade and the straight forward shots used (with lots of nice wides) are really top notch I think.

Another good alternative example would be a film like Shaun of the Dead. This has a slightly edgier choice of shots, with the use of high and low angles. This is something I may consider and I might well test out at the very least.

Release Forms

I thought I'd get the manager of the convenience store to sign this location release form. He was rather thrown by the jargon, so this is the furthest I got. Instead the manager gave me his "honest word" that it was o.k, he just didn't want to sign anything and anyway by law as long as the shop's name isn't in shot then I can legally film the shop's exterior.

Location Scouting 1

Here's the first day of location scouting I did. These are the potential locations for all the scenes apart from the opening scene indoors.

A potential for the street scene with shop owner and tramp.

And another A potential for the street scene with shop owner and tramp.

A cafe and newsagent that could be used aswell.

Another newsagent that could be used in the initial street scene.

The charity shop where our protagonist ends up.
